House Approves Home Rule Petition
A little after 4pm today, the legislative logjam over the home rule petition to permit beer and wine sales by potential Westwood Station tenant Wegmans was resolved and the home rule petition was adopted/passed. The bill now goes to the Senate for enactment and on to the Governor for his signature.
Passage of the Home Rule petition by the House puts an end to the quorum-questioning procedural maneuvers that have prevented or delayed legislative action during the informal session since August.

49,999 to go
see what Kat has to say about her excitement upon learning Wegmans may be coming to Westwood...
I think her post is a great illustration of at least one way Westwood Station will attract people. Depending on your point of view, that's good or bad. If Kat hops in her car and drives here every week...well I guess we better get a flyover or something.
But my view has always been that the community that will be Westwood Station has the potential to attract people like Kat to want to live here. By increasing the desirability of Westwood for younger, creative professionals, it will encourage more businesses that need those kinds of people to locate here. A condo in Westwood Station might become a reasonable alternative to a flat in Allston or the new luxury condos going up in South Boston/Fort Point. The office space near the marketplace could be a good place for someone to start up a company. All of this has the potential to make Westwood a location that competes with Boston and Cambridge for talent.
As those people get older and start families, they are not going to be raising their 3 kids in a two bedroom condo and sending them to the Downey School. They will buy houses in Westwood so they can keep working either at the Station or commute in to Boston via the MBTA. They will discover what a great town this is and stay here.
I don't have marketing data to support this. People can argue and dispute this all day--maybe it's just not affordable for anyone to do what I envision. But that's what I see in the potential of Westwood Station--not just to give some tax revenue, but to create a strong future for all of us.
Flattered!

Thanks for mentioning my blog post. While I don't have a car (yet), when Wegmans opens, I will take the commuter rail out there and exclusively grocery shop there. The quality of their merchandise is the highest of any grocery store I have ever seen, even over in Europe. Their organics are actually fairly priced, and thus affordable, and they are all about empowering people who don't think they can cook to cook (Rachael Ray, only before her and way less annoying.)
I would like to support your point, because here in Brighton and other parts of the city, you have a growing number of young adults like myself who either grew up or went to college in Wegmans territory. I can not begin to tell you how brand loyal people are to this store, and as us young adults start families and move out of our small apartments in the city to the suburbs, the fact that Westwood has the only Wegmans may be a factor (maybe small, but still a factor) in our decision of where to raise our families. If not Westwood, then Norwood or Canton - some place nearby.
I think the fear of some in the Westwood area is that Wegmans will be like an IKEA - some monstrosity that people come from miles around to see, whose company encourages a circus-like, "all day affair" atmosphere. Wegmans is not IKEA. Wegmans is a grocery store. That's all it is. They aren't going to encourage people to stay for an entire day. They legitimately try to give back to the neighborhood around them.
Thanks again, Dave!!!

Wegmans may not be IKEA
but according to the Wegmans website, their customers travel up to 30 miles to shop at their stores. Neighbors of the project are not worried about the commuters who come and stay the day, they are worried about the commuters who come for short periods and make multiple trips a week. If Westwood Station were just about Wegmans, there would not have been the publicity there was. However, Westwood Station is 1.5 Million Square Ft of retail alone which equals, according to the traffic consultants, 50,000 new cars a day. I believe those numbers were calculated before Wegmans was added to the list. There are a lot of people worried not about the organic produce in the aisles but the traffic plan in place to deal with the shoppers hunting out the produce. Hopefully, CCF will stay true to their word and address this issue in a successful manner.
I've heard...
I've heard that Wegmans is an outstanding store, also. Can't wait. Apparently they have tons more items for sale than a typical store like Stop and Shop.
Mainly can't wait to have a nice place to walk to for lunch...
Time for Change
It's great that this Wegmans issue is a dead issue now. Did Wegmans sign a lease today? The town,CCF and Wegmans have been waiting so long for the home rule petition to pass that I'm guessing Jay took a plane to NY to get the lease signed today? It will be interesting to see if there is any delay in Wegmans actually signing the lease.
My big question is does CCF have the funds now to move forward. Jay has his 2 anchor stores but I believe no money to build them.
Was CCF suppose to secure funding for this project by a certain date? I would like to see the contract between the town and CCF posted on this blog. I'm sure there is certain things the town has to live up to and the same goes with CCF.
I believe the town is prime for Change.
It's time for more transparency.
It's time for more diversity.
It's time for the residents to take back the town.
development agreement
The development agreement between town and CC&F was posted on the town website April 29, 2008. It is a bit hard to find, but it is there, along with transcripts and tons of other material. For some real fun reading, check out the transcripts of planning board meetings where the size of stairwells are discussed and the number and location of trees are considered.
Just read Kat's post
As another WNY transplant and former employee of Wegmans from my first years at college, let me just say that Wegmans is a wonderful company and their grocery stores are amazing. Think Whole Foods + Russo's in Watertown + Trader Joe's, yet completely affordable and pleasant. Prices and quality far surpass Stop & Shop and Shaw's. I find it hard to believe that Wegmans could become an IKEA-laden circus. I haven't lived in WNY for nearly 10 years but every time I go home to visit family, I always stop by Wegmans to stock up. I think this is a great development!
Enough talk about Wegmans
Enough talk about Wegmans it's a Grocery Store not an amusement park. So in this 1.5 billion dollar project all im hearing is Wegmans. If that's all this project is going to hang its hat on that's a shame.
Let me guess some of you residents are going to take offense to it's just a Grocery Store but come on that's what it is. I would be jumping up and down a little if it was a store like the Bass Shop but I'm a guy what can I tell you.
I would love to hear more from residents about the other stores. After a year hearing about Wegmans it's as if that's all Westwood Station has to offer.
A Grocery store is not going to get me excited, sorry Kat. I would like to hear about all the nice small stores like Newbury Street has that are coming to Westwood Station.
not sure latest tenant status
Here is a link to an article from some time ago (before I started WestwoodBlog) that listed the other stores that were planned; also here is a link to the official Westwood Station web site.
The "big one" is really Target. From a purely consumerist perspective, that is the most exciting store for a lot of people. And of course there will be Legacy Place in Dedham that will include a Whole Paycheck, I mean Whole Foods...
woohoo! I'm coming from
woohoo! I'm coming from Concord, NH to shop at Wegmans!
My brother, who was lukewarm about moving to Massachusetts from WNY just got an added boost of excitement upon hearing about Wegmans being in the area.
