Bike Racks for Westwood and Dedham

by Dave Atkins

Westwood and Dedham are utilizing a reimbursement program sponsored by the Metropolitan Area Planning Council to obtain a number of bike racks to be placed at schools and other locations in town. The racks cost the town nothing other than shipping and installation work. A working group from the Ped/Bike Safety Committee identified a number of locations including Downey, Sheehan, and Thurston Middle Schools, plus Town Hall, Islington Center, the School Street playground, and Buckmaster Pond, then coordinated with the school department and town administrator to meet an October 30 deadline for ordering the racks to qualify for reimbursement.

Westwood was allocated $3711 by MAPC and utilized nearly all of it. Money unallocated would have gone back into a regional pool where Westwood and other communities will have a second opportunity to request additional racks. This means that Westwood may have another opportunity in the Spring to fund more racks if additional locations are desired.

Meanwhile, next door in Dedham, according to the Dedham Board of Selectman's email newsletter:

Earlier this month, Dedham's Economic Development Department ordered 17 new bike racks for the Town. In addition to purchasing seven more large racks to be installed at local parks and canoe launches, we are introducing something new, circle and post racks for sidewalk parking in the Square and East Dedham.

I'll update this site and the Ped/Bike Safety email list when the racks arrive.
